Celebrate Sunflowers – Direct to Rubber Coloring Technique

Celebrate Sunflowers – Direct to Rubber Coloring Technique

celebrate sunflowers, direct to rubber technique

I have fallen in love with the gorgeous Stampin’ Up Create Sunflowers Stamp and Sunflowers Dies bundle; how about you?  Celebrate Sunflowers Bundle Product List

It is also part of a suite entitled Flowers for Every Season, which includes a ton of products including designer series paper (DSP), embossing folder, multiple stamp sets, dies, punch, and bling shown here: Flowers for Every Season Suite

The card shown above was made using the Create Sunflowers Stamp Set, the Sunflowers Dies, and a technique called direct-to-rubber coloring.  I’ve used some of the new 20-22 In-colors – Cinnamon Cider, Bumblebee, and Just Jade.  What is your favorite new color?  I love the Misty Moonlight and Magenta Madness.

Direct to Rubber Technique

When using the direct-to-rubber coloring technique, I could use Stampin’ Write markers or Classic Stampin’ Ink Pads (or ink refills) and a sponge or sponge dauber to color/daub/blend ink onto the red rubber stamp before I stamp on the card stock.  I’ve used this technique many times when I wanted to stamp a multi colored image.  It is especially helpful when I am highlighting or coloring certain words on a greeting stamp.

I started out by inking the sunflower entirely with bumblebee ink and then I daubed the early espresso and calypso coral inks directly on the red rubber stamp around the center of the sunflower.  I re-moistened the ink by huffing (applied my moist breath) on the inked stamp.  The ink can start to dry with the time it takes to apply all of the colors and breathing on the stamp moistens the ink.     To blend the colors, I used a blender pen and blended the bumblebee petals and then blended the calypso coral and early espresso inks.  I saw Patty Bennet demo the sunflower and fell in love with that look.

Finally, I folded the card using the “hinge fun fold”.  The cards can open bottom to top or from the side.

TIP:  Always check to see if your DSP is directional or has a pattern that needs to be cut a certain way.  Sometimes the DSP has no discernible direction and it won’t matter which way it is cut.

Celebrate Sunflowers Fun Fold Card

Celebrate Sunflowers Fun Fold Card

I love summer and the beautiful sunflowers are the epitome of summer. They stand so stately and majestic and who doesn’t love sunflower seeds!!

I decided to change up the color scheme for this sunflower card to a beautiful cool crisp Night of Navy and White. I love how the white sunflower pops off the navy background.

This fun fold card center navy panel flips up and provides another area to stamp a greeting or to write a personal message to your recipient.

TIP:  Always check to see if your designer series paper (DSP) is directional or has a pattern that needs to be cut a certain way.  Sometimes the DSP has no discernible direction and it won’t matter which way it is cut.

Fun Fold Spooktacular Box

Fun Fold Spooktacular Box

Don’t you just love this Fun Fold Spooktacular Box for the Spooktacular Bash card set?  It made up so cute using the Monster Bash Designer Series Paper along with both the Spooktacular Bash and Wonderfully Wicked Stamp sets!

In addition, the cute little spider die out of the Wicked Die Set was used to add a few spooky fun spiders.  They were coated with the new product from the 2019 Holiday Catalog called Shimmery Crystal Effects which as a result made them sparkle and shine to catch the eye.  The spooktacular greeting from the Spooktacular Bash Stamp Set was framed with a die in the Ornate Frames Dies.

To add a little more color and a whimsical look to the box, I grabbed the Gorgeous Grape striped ribbon from the 2019-20 Annual Catalog.

Measurements:

Basic Black Cardstock:  7-1/4″ x 8-1/4″ and a scrap for the ornate frame  (Score on 7-1/4″ side at .75 and 6.5.  Score on 8-1/4″ side at .25, .5, .75, 3.75, 4.5)

Gorgeous Grape Cardstock: 5″ x 2.5″ and a scrap to stamp the greeting and cut out the spiders

Monster Bash Designer Series Paper:  4.75″ x 2.25″

This Fun Fold Spooktacular Box was crafted from one sheet of Basic Black cardstock and will hold all four of the Halloween cards and envelopes that I posted earlier in the week.  If you see one you like, please leave a comment for me!   Check them out:

Winter Woods/Color Challenge

Winter Woods/Color Challenge

Today I participated in another color challenge card event and I love the way this card came out. I used the ink direct to block technique. The colors blended nicely. I chose Highland Heather, Pretty Peacock, and Mint Macaron. These 5 colors were included in the challenge.

Recipe:

Cardstock:

  • Pretty Peacock 5.5″ x 4.25″ and a scrap
  • Highland Heather 5.25″ x 4″ and a scrap
  • Very Vanilla 5″ x 3.75″ and a scrap

Designer Series Paper: Woven Threads DSP (3.75″ x 1.5″)

Technique: Apply highland heather ink to the middle of the acrylic block, then apply mint macaron to the top and pretty peacock to the bottom. Mist lightly with water to let the colors blend and then pick up the block and tilt slightly to allow the colors to run. Apply the block to the very vanilla card stock and allow the ink to soak into the card stock before removing the block. When dry, stamp the desired image over the colored block image.

  1. Adhere highland heather card stock to pretty peacock base.
  2. Apply woven threads DSP to the bottom of the very vanilla layer.
  3. Attach pretty peacock linen thread to cover seam between very vanilla and the DSP.
  4. Punch pretty peacock, very vanilla, and highland heather circles.
  5. Stamp greeting on highland heather
  6. Adhere circles in desired layers
  7. Attach very vanilla stamped layer to the highland heather layer.
  8. Attach stacked circles/greeting
  9. Spray lightly with champagne mist shimmer paint diluted in 70% rubbing alcohol. Allow to dry
  10. Attach a few woven threads sequins
